Why Solo Reel Handling Conflicts With Standard Scooter Controls

Divers Alert Network (DAN) advises carrying a floating dive-flag reel rather than attaching it directly to the diver. Under the standard MANTA and MANTA 2 two-trigger sequence, a solo snorkeler cannot keep both hands on the scooter controls and independently carry the reel at the same time.

Line position can also change as the float drifts or the rider turns, surfaces, or approaches an exit. Trying to adjust the reel while propulsion is running combines two control tasks at the moment the line route is changing.

Do not adjust the reel, change line length, or troubleshoot the line route while propulsion is running. If the line snags or its route becomes unclear, stop propulsion; do not use thrust to test or free the snag.

Two Tethers, Two Jobs: Keep Retention and Flag Towing Separate

Keep these two line systems separate. Do not connect the flag reel to your body or the scooter wrist cord, and keep the flag line away from the scooter handles and propulsion guards.

Five Checks Before Entering the Water

Complete the equipment and line-layout checks on shore or on the boat. Test propulsion only in the water, following the model manual.

1. Use the required surface marker. Follow the flag, float, display, and distance rules for the site. Keep watching for boat traffic even when a flag is displayed.
2. Inspect the flag system. Check the flag, float, line, and reel. Replace worn line, and do not use a reel that jams or releases line unevenly.
3. Prepare the scooter. Complete the model’s normal pre-use inspection. MANTA and MANTA 2 manuals tell snorkelers to wear an approved personal flotation device and keep long hair controlled.
4. Separate the line routes. Keep the flag line clear of your body, the scooter wrist cord, the handles, and the propulsion area. Do not coil the flag line around the scooter for carrying.
5. Set the control limit. Keep the scooter locked while it is out of the water. Under the standard two-trigger procedure, do not power the scooter while you are also responsible for carrying the dive-flag reel. Stopping to adjust the line does not establish a workable combined setup.

If the Tow Line Becomes Uncontrolled

Stop powered movement as soon as the line route is unclear, the reel jams, the line crosses your body or scooter, or it begins moving toward a propulsion guard.

Immediate response: Release the triggers and keep propulsion off. Maintain breathing and buoyancy, alert your buddy or guide, and make a controlled exit using the site emergency plan. Do not use thrust to pull the line free.

If the float or reel is caught by a boat or another external force and begins dragging you, let go of the hand-held reel.

If the line touches or enters a propulsion guard, keep propulsion off and do not put your fingers or other objects into the guard. Do not restart the scooter during the session. Once safely out of the water, keep it locked and visually inspect only the outside of the guard. If the line entered the guard, or the guard or controls may have been affected, keep the scooter out of service.

Replace damaged line and any jammed reel before the next use. Do not use a scooter whose controls do not respond normally. Waves and current may require an earlier exit.
